The spot that now is home to Poe’s Tavern once had an identical cottage right next door where the Tapio family lived. Mr. Tapio ran the waterworks for the island. The history of Poe’s Tavern is plain and simple. It was founded to preserve the spirit of Mr. Edgar Allan Poe. He lived a rather short and somewhat tragic life, but left with us inspiration, imagination and great knowledge. A young man, he enlisted in the army under the alias Edgar Allan Perry. He was stationed at Fort Moultrie on the western end of Sullivans for approximately 13 months beginning November of 1847. His brief time here inspired, “The Gold Bug”, a mystical beetle that led to a buried treasure. Sullivan’s also played a role in “Balloon Hoax” and “The Oblong Box.” Amid conflicting accounts, at the age of 40, Edgar Allan Poe died alone and impoverished.
