A Charleston Welcome
Date:
12-5-2008
Description
Sally Cade's signature style of capturing the fine details of Charleston architecture has made her work popular with collectors who want to take home a Charleston memory. Her latest series of oils includes a tribute to gathering places -- eateries and pubs that are at the heart of the Charleston experience -- and charming doorways that beckon you to enter. Cade's paintings capture the flavor of the city -- in her pieces you can hear the church bells, feel the warmth of the gas lamps and wonder at the fabulous palette of this vibrant, historic city.

Inspiration and Illustrations
Date:
2-7-2009
Description
Based on a true story, Shackles describes what happens when three little boys search for buried treasure on Sullivan's Island & dig up a bit of history--shackles used centuries ago on slaves who were held on the island. This poignant story, written in lyric prose by SC Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth is beautifully illustrated by artist Leslie Pratt-Thomas. Ultimately a story of healing, this children's book reminds us of a bit of US history that dramatically impacted our culture & society. The original paintings created for this book along with more paintings by Pratt-Thomas will be featured in this show and booksigning. Both Pratt-Thomas and Wentworth will be available to sign copies of the book on Firday Feb. 6th from 5:30 - 7:00 during Gallery Row's First Friday on Broad, and the following night at the opening reception of Pratt-Thomas' show, Inspiration & Illustrations on Sat. Feb. 7th, 6-8 pm at Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island. To preview the paintings in this show, from our home page, go to Artists -- Paintings -- Leslie Pratt-Thomas -- Shackles.

Visual Diaries - Ann Merrill &Leslie Pratt-Thomas
Date:
3-7-2008
Description

Travel Journals – Visual Diaries
Two Woman Show featuring Ann Lee Merrill and Leslie Pratt-Thomas

This March, Edward Dare Gallery located on Historic Broad Street’s Gallery Row in Charleston, SC will feature a globe spanning collection of works inspired by the extensive travels of painters Ann Lee Merrill and Leslie Pratt-Thomas. Europe, New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, Thailand and Africa are all captured in these visual diaries. Regular jaunts abroad have resulted in a constantly growing and evolving body of work for both artists. Don’t miss this opportunity to take home a lasting remembrance of your favorite corner of the world. This show will begin with an opening reception on Friday, March 7 from 5 – 8 pm during the FQGA artwalk and will close the end of March.

As with Ms. Pratt-Thomas, the lowcountry is Ms. Merrill’s home. Merrill has said, “…the people, the shores, the marshes, the reminders of historic struggles of the peninsula and surrounding areas, are all a part of me. I love the excitement of going over the bridges of Charleston, seeing the long vistas of horizontal bands of color, the thousands of greens, blues, golds and reds revealed as we travel in the low country. This landscape, ageless and ever new, where the big sky and the horizon seem to go on forever, is always so paintable.” Merrill and Pratt-Thomas will continue to travel and bring home their painted visual diaries of their journeys abroad, and you can rest assured that they when they bring these pieces home it will be to Charleston. The Edward Dare Gallery is located at 31 Broad St, Charleston, 843-853-5002. To preview this show log onto www.edwarddare.com

People, Places & Things, new oils by Rich Nelson
Date:
12-7-2007
Description
With his use of purposeful, strong and visible brushstrokes, there is a definite sense of the artist’s hand at work in the paintings of Rich Nelson, whether it is in the texture of an orange, the plump yet delicate, hands of a child or a fleeting moment captured in a landscape painted en plein aire . In his pieces you can almost taste the fruit, smell the salt air and feel the subjects breathe. We are proud to present Nelson’s latest work in this extraordinary offering of paintings of simply people, places and things.

Southern Light - Paint Out
Date:
5-28-2008
Description
<SUP>

After the success of last year's event, the 2008 Southern Light Plein Air Paintout will take place again this May in downtown Charleston, SC. The event will begin with the canvas stamping on Wed., May 28 and will end with the reception and silent auction at the Charleston Harbour Club on Sat., May 31 (with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Charleston County School of the Arts Music Program). One of the highlights of this Plein Air Paint Out is the honor of having nationally acclaimed plein air painter Tony Van Hasselt, aws as the juror for the painting exhibition.

This event is open to all artists and would be of interest to any outdoor painter who would enjoy spending a few days painting in beautiful Charleston, SC this May. The Spoleto Festival is still in full swing during this last week of May, so it's an extra special time to plan a visit to Charleston. For artists that live here, its a great time to be outdoors painting in downtown Charleston with all of the festival excitement in the air. Artists are invited to bring any available handouts, brochures, postcards etc that advertise their gallery affiliations and/or their personal studio information so that potential clients will know how to find them and their work after the event.

The Charleston County School of the Arts Band Program is nationally recognized as one of the nations outstanding high school bands. Despite their impressive record nationally as musicians and as a top 10 school in the state academically, this program is faced with finding ways to continue its proud tradition of excellence with ever decreasing funds. With a budget of over $60,000, less than $4,000 is provided by the School District ($44 per student per year). As a result, the burden of increased funding falls upon the families of these talented young men and women; who many times cannot meet this shortfall. Through the generosity of participating artists, galleries, sponsoring merchants, and patrons of the arts, hopefully a portion of this funding deficit can be met.

For more information about the Broad Street Merchants Association and Gallery Row, this event or to request a registration package, please contact Julie Sweat at the Edward Dare Gallery 843-853-5002, www.edwarddare.com .
</SUP>

Natural Rhythm, paintings by Michael Patterson
Date:
12-1-2007
Description

Join us at Sandpiper Gallery on Sat. Dec. 1 from 6 - 8 pm for our Holiday Celebration and opening reception for "Natural Rhythm", new paintings by artist Michael Patterson. Rendered in dramatic color with a nod to cubism, Patterson's work has a graphic energy created by a focus on the negative shapes formed by an object, repetition of these shapes and the lines created when color massses converge. The relationship of these shapes sets the rhythm for a piece and leads the viewers eye around the piece. These oils and watercolors of performing musicians, figures lounging on beaches or hovering on rainy city streets give a fresh face to the familiar, revealing the universality of everyday life.

Roberta Remy - Traditions
Date:
10-2-2009
Description
The latest body of work by Roberta Remy, Traditions, will be featured in a solo show at the Edward Dare Gallery beginning with an opening reception on Oct. 2, 2009. This show will run through November 5, 2009. The preparation for this show began while Remy was teaching a portraiture workshop at Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan’s Island in May of 08. Remy has always had an interest in the traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. While in the lowcountry, Remy was intrigued by the people shrimping and fishing in tidal creeks or working at roadside basket stands—and the idea for a new series developed. Excited about the potential of this series, Remy and gallery owner Julie Sweat discussed possibilities and made plans for a return trip from Santa Fe to Sullivan’s Island in the fall to paint and sketch people on location. The models that were chosen to work with Remy were not necessarily professional models, but all had a story to tell. As Remy sketched, made color studies and photographed the models in the Sandpiper Gallery studio and on the docks of nearby neighbors, the colorful tapestry of the southern coastal culture of the models unfolded. Comparisons to Remy’s childhood memories of growing up near the same ocean hundreds of miles away in New York led to laughter and nods of recognition. It became clear that although the experiences and traditions that are passed down are very unique to each person’s heritage, the common threads of the human spirit are seen as these traditions are honored and passed on to the next generation.
“All my life I have found the study of people, their faces and hands fascinating. Wanting to paint them, to capture their character, personality and essence is actually what kept me in art school for so many years. I studied everything about drawing, anatomy and painting techniques to display my models in the most magnificent way possible. While models are sitting for me, I talk to them a great deal -- this little glimpse into their souls somehow gets into my paintings.”
A contemporary painter working in the realist tradition, Roberta Remy specializes in Still-Life, Interiors, Figure and Portrait oil paintings. Remy attended Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League of New York where she studied with Frank Mason, George Passantino, David Leffel, and Sherrie McGraw. Remy’s work has been included in numerous juried and invitational shows including the Salmagundi Club, OPA and the Albuquerque Museum .

Figurative Works - Jim Darlington
Date:
5-1-2009
Description
Darlington has developed a following in each category that he paints; landscapes, still life, architectural and figurative works. However, portraiture is the area that he enjoys most; often combining features from several models into one portrait. His latest series of figurative pieces were created using a wide range of hues, from pure white to deep black -- with palette knife work to better indicate texture. These techniques add a sculptural quality to the paintings and a dramatic visual impact.

Summer Pleasures
Date:
6-27-2009
Description
In this show of new work by Susan Hecht, some of her favorite subjects to paint will be featured; the peaceful landscapes of the Carolinas and the spirit of everyday people. Many of the pieces in this show are small figurative oil paintings of people and children at the beach. Hecht says, "I think people are at their best at the beach -- whether it is kids playing and totally enjoying life, or lost in the process of building the greatest sand castle ever, or lost in deep thoughts contemplating life. The sheer enjoyment of being at such a place that puts everything into perspective for us is something that I try to capture". The opening reception will be Saturday June 27 from 6-8 pm and as a special treat we'll be serving an adult spin on The Heron's famous icy treats courtesy of our neighbors at The Heron. We will also host a private preview with the artist the same night, earlier in the evening from 5-6 pm. Susan will be discussing her work for a small group of collectors beginning at 5:15. Seating is limited, please contact the gallery to reserve your space for this special chance to meet Susan and hear about her techniques , inspiration and process.

Blues on Broad
Date:
2-5-2010
Description
Gallery Row on Historic Broad Street is thrilled to become an official venue of the 20th Annual Lowcountry Blues Bash February 5, 2009 from 6 -8PM during the First Friday on Broad artwalk. Four Galleries on Gallery Row will be official hosts for the festival , featuring 3 blues performers and numerous “Soulful Artists” exhibiting their work throughout the galleries.

Edward Dare Gallery will feature Blues inspired works by two artists; painter and musician Jim Darlington and fine art photographer, Ron Anton Rocz. The Mississippi Delta – south of Memphis, north of Vicksburg and between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers – is known as “The Land Where the Blues Began.” The music of the plantation slaves, share-croppers, river levy & railway line laborers emerged as work songs and evolved into “the blues.” Local photographer, Ron Anton Rocz, began his “Delta Blues Collection” series of photos in 2000. These photos give glimpses into the life and time of the early 1900’s, when names like Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters and B.B. King had their start in the Delta. These photos were created mainly around Clarksdale, Mississippi and at Hopson Plantation and it’s famed Shack-Up Inn. With their mutual zeal for the blues, Darlington and Rocz have planned for years to collaborate in a joint show of their work. This Gallery Row event in conjunction with the Blues Bash seemed the perfect opportunity. Darlington’s latest series of figurative works, “Muses and Musicians” work in harmony with Rocz’s Delta Blues photos. Together they provide the perfect backdrop for the soul shaking, foot tapping blues that will be provided by the harmonica and guitar duo, Freddie Vanderford and Brandon Turner.

COCO VIVO Fine Art and Design will feature new works by Angela Trotta Thomas, “Midnight Hour Blues”. Gallery Director and artist Danny Laran will display a new collection that reflects his life as a young boy growing up on a Carolina tobacco farm. Entertainment will be provided by Juke Joint Johhny , “the harmonica beast of the southeast” and veteran guitarist Drew Baldwin with his 1915-vintage harp-guitar in his arsenal.

At the Hamlet Gallery and Ellis-Nicholson Gallery entertainment will be provided by the homegrown Charleston talent of young bluesman Davis Coen who is currently enjoying heavy airplay on satellite radio.

Mary Martin Gallery and Spencer Fine Art will also have entertainment and a wonderful variety of soulful art for art lovers and collectors.

For a full listing of the events scheduled for the Lowcountry Blues Bash, visit www.bluesbash.com. Art on the Beach-Featuring Kathy Sullivan
Date:
11-8-2009
Description
The expressive and energetic work of Kathy Sullivan has gained great exposure in recent years due to her passion for horses and her involvement with the race horse circuit. This passion for horses began at an early age in Chicago, IL. The greatest motivation for her equine work comes from the loss of her beloved Thoroughbred who trained at Churchill Downs.
Due to her family connection and recent relocation to the lowcountry, she has developed another keen interest -- to expand her portfolio and capture the humor and the heart of our abundant sea island wildlife and other furry and feathered creatures.
This fascination with the sea islands and the resulting paintings caught the attention of Creative Spark’s Art on the Beach Poster committee and landed her as the featured artist on the 2009 event poster. As part of this eagerly anticipated tour of homes, artwork and culinary taste of the islands, Sandpiper Gallery will feature Kathy’s work and she will be on hand at the gallery to meet with collectors and admirers on Sunday Nov.8 from 1 – 5 pm. Please join us for one of our famous Woo-Hoos and stop in to meet Kathy. Tickets for this annual fundraiser are $35 and can be purchased at Sandpiper Gallery or Creative Spark on Longpoint Road. The ticket price gets you into the tour of homes, to view the artwork and to sample the cuisine offered by the restaurants on hand in the family kitchens, plus a grand finale dessert buffet at Station 22.
