Artist :: Charlie Black

Artist Charlie Black creates bowls, vases, platters, hollow vessels and ornaments from exotic and rare woods including those indigenous to the low country.  His artistic wood turning incorporates functionality with the natural beauty unique to each piece of wood.  Charlie has enjoyed working with wood for years.  In 2001 when his family gave him a lathe, he at last found his niche.  "I strive to meld classic forms with the natural beauty of the wood and let my pieces evolve as I turn.  From the first cutting of a log, I let the wood's shape, grain, and natural characteristics "tell"  me how the finished piece should look."  Charlie works  mostly with green salvaged wood;  first he roughs out the piece, then sets it aside to dry before the final turning and finishing.  Most pieces take at least six months from start to finish, but larger ones may take a year to complete.
